Edinburgh University Hillwalking Club

Roger Wild from the Mountaineering Council of Scotland will present a talk about 'Safety Aspects of Winter Walking' on Tuesday 11th November at 19:30 in Appleton Tower LT1. He will be giving an extremely informative and entertaining presentation on all aspects of winter walking. It is free and open to anyone so bring your friends!

For all of you in need of some gear, there are several discount nights in outdoor shops that the club has been invited to.

Discount nights at the Rose Street Tiso are on Tuesday 28th October and Tuesday 4th November from 18:30 to 20:30. Tiso at EICA Ratho also have a discount night on Thursday 30th October 18:00 to 22:00. There will be great savings on climbing hardwear and ropes at 25%, rock shoes at 15%, hiking boots at 15% and clothing at 15%. 10% off all books.

The 6th Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival runs this weekend from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th October at George Square. There is a diverse range of films being screened covering many activities such as skiing and snow boarding, mountain biking and other extreme sports, as well as the more traditional climbing and mountaineering films. Films include the world premiere of Dave MacLeod's new film "Echo Wall" about his ground-breaking, possibly E12, climb on Ben Nevis this summer.

This weekend is our first weekend trip of the year. We're going to Laggan Bridge in the Cairngorms National Park. We'll be staying for 2 nights at the Pottery Bunkhouse. http://www.potterybunkhouse.co.uk/index.asp

The coach is scheduled to LEAVE The Pleasance from outside the sports union entrance at 07:30 on both Saturday and Sunday morning. Please arrive by 07:15, we will not wait for late-comers! We will be offering a range of walks organised by experienced members of the club, these will all be explained on the day. Hopefully the weather will be good so you'll get some fantastic views!

The sports fair is on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th September from 10:00 until 16:00 at The Pleasance. Come along to chat to us about what we do, we're a friendly bunch of people! Our freshers' week event involves a stroll up our local hill, Arthur's Seat, followed by a trip to our favourite pub The Southsider on West Richmond Street. Meet at the entrance to the Royal Commonwealth Pool near Pollock Halls at 14:30 on Sunday 21st September.

As you all know you’ll be able to get your hands on the 2007/8 EUHWC Yearbook sometime in mid-May. Sadly, however, all it consists of at present is one fantastic article (thanks Mats!) and some pretty pictures. Some say the latter count for a thousand words, I say that’s rubbish and I need you guys to get scribbling!!

What I’d love is to hear from as many of you as possible so that we have a wide range of stories to trigger memories for all of you when you pick up the Yearbook in five years time (or every night before bed, whatever floats your boat).
