We will be
heading to Torridon, which is in the northwestern Highlands, about 50
miles west of Inverness.
While the last trip to Glen Shiel was all about Munros, and lots of
them, Torridon has no long multi-Munro ridges, but what it lacks in
quantity it definitely makes up for in terms of quality. The hills
around Torridon are known as some of the best in Scotland, and include
the likes of Beinn Alligin, Beinn Eighe, and the mighty Liathach.
Sign-up
The sign-up will start at 8:30pm on Tuesday 2nd March in the pub (Doctors).
Sign-up will be taking place in the "dark corner" (the far end of the
bar from the door), so please form an orderly queue.
The cost of the trip will be £40, so please bring this with you when
you sign up (cheques preferable), and your membership card. If you are
not yet a member of the club then you can sign up for membership at the
same time, and this will cost you £15 for the semester.
[If you are unable to make the sign-up, and you have a very good reason
why not, then you can email us by 6pm on Monday and request permission
for a friend to be able to sign up on your behalf. They will still have to queue, so this does not guarantee you a place.]
Food & Drink
Included
in the price of the trip is a meal on Saturday night (please let us
know at sign-up if you have any dietary requirements), and milk for
anyone who wants it. We will be stopping on the way there for chips,
and also on the way back if there is much demand. Remember to bring
alcohol with you if you would like to drink.
Accommodation
We will be staying in the SYHA hostel in Torridon.
The hostel has a kitchen, two "panoramic" lounges, hot showers and a
drying room (not that any of your kit will be getting wet!).
Walks
There should be plenty of walks in
the area, without having to drive too far from the hostel. This hills
in this area are known as some of the best in Scotland, and we will be
offering a variety of walks. To ensure that there are some easy walks
available there will be a couple of pre-signs for any walk organisers
who would be happy to organise an easy walk on Saturday. Please let us
know by Monday afternoon if you want one of these.
Please remember - due to recent weather conditions even on easy walks there will be a lot of snow and ice, so you will need to have stiff-soled boots and proper winter clothes. More info on what (not) to wear is available in the equipment section
of our website. If you are in any doubt, about boots or clothing, then
just bring them along on Tuesday evening and we can let you know if
they are suitable, otherwise you may not be allowed to go on walks.
Drivers
We have enough minibus drivers
already, but still need a few car drivers for the trip. If you have a
car in Edinburgh, and you are willing to drive for the club then please
get in touch by Monday afternoon. All drivers get a place on the trip
in advance, a £10 discount on the trip price, and your petrol will be
paid for by the club.
