[hillwalkers] Easter long weekend trip – Snowdonia!

Hello all,

Sign up for the next club trip will be this coming Tuesday at the Southsider at 8.30 pm. If you want to see Monika slowly crack as she comes to the realisation she’s not as ok as she thinks with organising a trip that doesn’t involve any Munros, Jonathan gaze in wonder at a road with more than two lanes and me lead a faff (slash secret three peaks challenge) then this may well be the trip for you!

For those new to the club this year, Easter is the first of two long weekend trips the club runs per year. This means that instead of running from Friday evening to Sunday evening, we extend the trip over two more days, leaving early on Friday and coming back on Monday evening. We also tend to go a little further afield on these trips, and this year we’re outdoing ourselves by going all the way down to Snowdonia in the mystical land of Wales!

Wales, being almost unimaginably far South, is a bit of a mystery to those of us who hail from good, honest Northern places. We’ve heard there are some mountains, dragons, sheep, and the hostel we’ve booked looks really nice (http://lledrhouse.co.uk), but the rest is a bit of a mystery. However the trip will definitely still include hills and stuff, as well as all the Easter themed staples, such as the Easter egg hunt, the rest we’ll figure out when we get there!

Key points:

  •  Sign up Tuesday 8.30pm at the Southsider.
  •  Departure will be 1pm at the CSE on Friday 7th April, we will be returning late on Monday 10th.
  •  Barring any freak weather events it’s highly unlikely we’ll be needing winter gear on this trip, but we’ll make a final decision nearer the time.
  •  Easter themed games and activities.
  •  No Munros, but lots of other cool stuff, such as tea at Sionyn’s house.
  •  We’re still looking for two more car drivers if anyone is keen.

Figure 1: A photo of a hill, reputedly in Snowdonia, taken today by Imogen’s uncle, possibly even Snowdon itself, then again maybe not.

Cheers,

Adam

[hillwalkers] Weekly Email: SMR Fundraiser and AGM

Good evening, Hillwalkers! I hope everyone had a great time out this weekend. We are overjoyed to see lots of photos of people out on the hill on Saturday for our Scottish Mountain Rescue fundraiser, many from nearby and some from abroad! And how wonderful it was to gather hillwalkers from past years together on the Alumni trip and walk as if not a day has gone by!

SMR Fundraiser Reminder

If you went up a hill on Saturday, or even if you didn't and would like to donate anyway, please make your donation as soon as possible. We hope to hit our £1000 target by this coming weekend and are already more than halfway there. Once you donate you will receive a link to a page where you can post your summit photo and a walk description to be considered for the prize categories.

Inline image 2

Photo submission by John Mann

Every pound that is donated will earn one raffle ticket towards three big prizes (a Rab down jacket, an Osprey 38L rucksack, and a voucher for Merrell Capras) as well as Keela discount vouchers (please be aware that if you donate anonymously you forfeit raffle tickets). Photo prizes are described on the JustGiving page.

Ceilidh and Free Wine

The EUHWC AGM is this SaturdayMarch 18th at 6:30pm in the St Giles' Parish Church in Marchmont. Read Becky's email on how the AGM works (how to run for positions, etc.) here.

Ceilidh+AGM: £5

Ceilidh alone: £7.

You get a discount on the ceilidh ticket for attending the AGM! You also get a bottomless glass of FREE WINE at the AGM (this will all be gone by the ceilidh), as well as free food. Register your interest on the Facebook event. Tickets will be on sale at the pub quiz tomorrow – just find Imogen or Rosie. It's going to be awesome!

Tomorrow: Pub Quiz!

There's nothing more fun than showing off your knowledge, especially when it has to do with topics like Munros and beards! Join us tomorrow at the Cellar Monkey in Marchmont at 7:30pm for the epic showdown. Top three teams win prizes!

This means our usual pub activities like gear return and money business will take place at the Cellar Monkey tomorrow, not the Southsider.

Misc:

Stickers

Awesome Random Bods Emma and Matt have secured us EUHWC stickers to slap on everything from your car to your laptop to your buddy's bum. They look amazing and are a great memento. Only £1 per sticker!

Logo Competition

Would you like your artwork plastered on EUHWC clothing? Would you like your design to be EUHWC's new logo? We are running our Club Logo Change simultaneously with our usual clothing logo competition – we plan to upgrade both our website and logo over the summer to "keep up with the times". Create a simple design before March 16th, this Thursday, and send your entry to Jonathan. May contain Hamish but Hamish is not a requirement.

Quotemaster

Send Sion your funny quotes from the Alumni trip this weekend and any great photos! Also, if you have promised Sion a yearbook writeup for a trip, please complete it and send it to him asap.

Gear

Please return gear tomorrow from the Glencoe trip (or any other past trip) sooner rather than later! Griffin is out of town but Daniel will be there to gladly take the gear back.

Tomorrow at the Pub (Cellar Monkey, NOT The Southsider):

AGM tickets are being sold for £5.

Stickers are being sold for £1 per pop.

Return gear.

See you at the Cellar Monkey tomorrow!

[hillwalkers] Hillwalking Club AGM info!!!

Hello Hillwalkers!

On
Saturday 18th March, we will be having our Annual General Meeting and Ceilidh! (St Giles Parish Church EH9 2DW). We will be starting the AGM prompt at 6.30pm. Get there early for the FREE WINE!!! Once the AGM is finished, we can start the serious business of ceilidhing!

Tickets will be available at the pub on Tuesday, and in limited number on the door.

          AGM + Ceilidh (£5)

          Ceilidh (£7)

426_1126106300774005_3269302973812914111_n.jpg

The main purpose of the AGM is to elect our new committee for next year. The first attached file has a rundown of the different positions (there are 13 of them up for grabs) and some information about each one. If you’re thinking of running (and you should be!) there is some more information about the committee on our website. Also feel free to talk to any of the current committee via email or at the pub.

To stand for committee, you need someone to nominate you for your chosen position/s. In order to get through the whole process a bit quicker, we are taking pre-nominations online this year. To do this, follow the instructions at this link. Note: you cannot nominate yourself for committee, so ask someone else to fill out the form for you. The online form is purely optional; people can still be nominated on the night as usual.

If a position has more than one nominee, you may (but don’t have to) give a brief statement to explain why you would be well suited to the position etc. This will be followed by a very short Q&A session, but don’t worry this will be very friendly, and you shouldn’t feel at all worried or intimidated. The new committee generally takes over at the end of May, after our final trip of the year.

Being on the committee is a fantastic opportunity to get really involved with the running of the club, and its great fun. Plus, there are the perks like pre-signs for trips (no more queuing!) Any questions about standing for election please just email me and ask. If you are unable to attend the AGM, you can still be elected; just send me a statement that can be read out on your behalf, stating which position/s you wish to stand for, and setting out why you think you should be elected.

Also attached are the minutes of last year’s AGM and our committee updates, just if you fancy having a look through to stay up-to-date with how the club is being run.

To our non-student members – I’m sorry to say that only current student members are able to stand for the committee, vote in committee elections, or vote on constitutional amendments. You are however very welcome to come along to the AGM anyway, to take part in and influence debate as well as the very important job of counting votes!

That’s about it. Again, please get in touch if you have any questions.

Much Love,

Your forever fabulous Secretary

xxx

[hillwalkers] EUHWC: Glencoe Anniversary Trip

—unsubscribe to this mailing list here

Dear striders, strollers and wanderers of the hills,

We're having a party in Glencoe, and you are invited!

Whilst partying should be allowed for the sake of partying, it is customary for a party to have an excuse. Well, let me give you three!
  • Our club is hitting the history books with three whole decades of highland hilarity in the bag.
  • There are prizes up for grabs as part of our monumental Mountain Rescue fundraiser.
  • It's an exclusive chance to meet our alumni, who, according to Callum, have some of the best banter this side of Ballater.

If all this isn't enough, we also have Nick Carter on the trip, (pro mountaineer and cool dude) providing tailor-made training FOR FREE. I assume you are sold already, so please read on for the #deets….

Inline image 1

3. Fundraiser

In Scotland we are seriously lucky ducks. We have a free mountain rescue service, made up of volunteers who are ready 24/7 to pluck us off the hill when things go wrong. So really, sharing a little cash to keep the service running is the least we can do!

The great thing about fundraising, is that it means you also get to do something fun. The basic idea is go up a hill but make it cool. Here are some ideas to get the creative juices flowing….

  • Get dressed up
  • Get naked
  • Bring a goldfish
  • Bring your Granny
  • Human Pyramid
  • Put a lemon in your mouth

Be sure to take a picture, post it on the facebook page and pop a penny in the bucket. You'll then be in with a chance of winning PRIZES! Did I hear something about a Rab down jacket?
You don't have to be on the trip to take part. You don't even have to be in the country. Wherever you are, I dare you to beat my lemoninthemouth picture.

4. Training

Talking of charity, St. John Ambulance are funding a professional guide to provide winter skills tuition!
That's something you don't get handed to you on a silver platter by your butler every day.
It's open to beginners and experienced members alike- we'll tailor the weekend depending on what you guys want. Email me in advance or chat to me at sign-up to fix yourself a place.
Image result for silver platter

5. Alumni

This is also the alumni trip (wow, this trip has really got it all).
Are you an ex-member of the club, feeling the urge to tell us all stories of how it was in "the good old days"? Now is your chance. Email callum to book yourself a spot.
(Was everything really black and white back in 1987?)

———————————————————————————-

I don't know about you, but I'm getting bored of all this excitement. That is QUITE ENOUGH FOR NOW.
So please, calm down and try not to smash any windows at sign-up.
Lots of love,
Harry Carstairs and Callum Girdwood
(your very own training, safety, vice presidential, alumni and party-organising dream team)

[hillwalkers] EUHWC: Wicked Winter, Broken Bones and Serious Skills

—unsubscribe to this mailing list here

Good day, hillwalking friends,

It is time for a round up of all things training!

First things first- a big shout out to everybody who has given their time to teach or learn on the winter skills day trips, avalanche talk, Firbush weekend and Ratagan training. You guys make this club happen- without developing our skills and sharing them with each other, we simply couldn't do what we do. See figure 1 for a depiction of what we do.

You've tramped around in the mist taking bearings, you've fiddled around with crampon straps, you've got snow all down your back practising ice axe arrests. You are heroes!
Inline image 1
Figure 1: Generally just being awesome. Photo credit- anonymous.

So what's the plan, Stan, how can we top that? Check out numbers 1, 2 and 3…
1. Winter Skills LEVEL UP

Did you miss out on the winter skills first time round?
Do you have some experience, and feel ready for the masterclass?
Nick Carter (MIC, climber of Peruvian peaks and Himalayan heights, pro guide, cool dude, see figure 2) is all ours 10-12th March in Glencoe. For FREE!
A limited number of presigns may be available, so email me if this sounds like your cup of Earl Grey.
Figure 2: Nick hanging out with Everest in the background. Casual.
2. First Aid, Hill Style
What does one do, when the walk organiser trips over their crampons, puncturing themselves with an ice axe in the process and starts becoming hypothermic? Let's hope it doesn't come to that. But still, better safe than sorry- if you missed out on the first aid course happening this weekend, you have another chance!
This is a one day course on 1st April, delivered professionally by the British Association of Ski Patrollers. It will be held on central campus and the cost will be £50 (subsidised by the club). Send me an email to book yourself a spot.
Inline image 4
Figure 3: This sign means "First Aid"

3. Calling Walk Organisers of the Future
Do you see yourself in committee and/or organising walks next academic year? The future of the club is in your hands. Make sure your hands are a safe pair of hands.
Davy Virdee (MIC, avalanche expert, alpine conqueror, see figure 4) is all ours the weekend 28th -30th April at Tomintoul. He will do a good old round up of the skills it takes to plan and execute an awesome day out in Scotland, and get you thinking about what it means to be the most experienced member in a group. Two days of training for £20 = massive bargain. Check out the course description on his website.
Emails please if this is your calling.
Inline image 5
Figure 4: Davy checking out the hills around Tomintoul.
Cool. Ice Cold!
Alright, alright, alright. Let me leave you with a quick thought.
Gender
I am painfully aware that so far, all of the pros that have made an appearance with this club have been male. So let me assure you, girls, that this is a result of who I happen to have contacts for, and it certainly isn't because there is any shortage of really amazing female hillwalkers. Here's a quick example. Di Gilbert, 31, MIC, has completed all the Munros, summitted Mount Everest, worked as Field Operations Manager for Antarctic Expeditions and Logistics, represented Great Britain at Ski Mountaineering and is currently on her way round the Corbetts. Take that for inspiration.
Inline image 6
Figure 5: Girl power. EUHWC has bucket loads.

I hope you'll agree with me that this club does a pretty good job of making sure that girls and guys are given the same opportunities. But is there a disproportionate number of guys organising walks? Are the boys expected to bag more Munros? Lets not be afraid to bring these things up. Here's to sexism free hills!
That's all for now.
Train hard, stay safe, but look cool at all times.
Harry C
(Training and Safety Officer)
